How To Apply For A Driving Licence In India

In India, the legal age to drive a motor vehicle is 18 years. However, if you wish to drive a gearless scooter or a gearless bike, you are allowed to drive it from the day you turn 16 years of age. But before you get excited about getting behind the wheel, there is one very crucial step that you need to take, i.e., getting a valid driver’s licence. A driving licence is an official document issued by the government of India that states that the holder is of age and qualified to drive a motor vehicle in the country. According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, no individual is allowed to drive a motor vehicle in India without a valid driving licence. If any person is caught driving without a driving licence, he or she would have a traffic e-challan issued against their name. Hence, when you turn 18 and are capable of driving a motor vehicle, the first thing you need to do is get a driving licence. However, you may be confused as to how to go about this process. Read on to know how to apply for a driving licence in India.

Before you apply for a licence, you need to first understand and establish what type of licence you require. Different classes of vehicles will require different licence types in order to be driven. For example, if you only know how to drive a two wheeler, there is a separate licence type for that. If you need a driving licence to drive a heavy commercial vehicle, then there is a separate licence type for that as well. Once you know your purpose, your application process will become much simpler. Now, to apply for a licence, check and take an appointment at your nearest RTO office. There, you need to submit the following documents, along with your application:

  • Proof of age
  • Address proof
  • Passport sized photographs
  • Form 1
  • Form 1A
  • Form 4

If you are of 40 years of age or older, you will also need to submit a medical certificate to certify your fitness to drive. Once you have submitted your application and your documents, you will be asked to pay an application fee. You can also follow the same procedure and apply for a driving licence online as well. Post that, you will receive your learner’s permit, if you do not know how to drive already. You can then apply for a permanent driving licence after 30 days from the date of issuance of the learner’s permit. If you do know, then you will be notified about the time and date of your driving test, as well as the test center. Be sure to appear on time for your test. You will also be asked questions related to driving etiquette and traffic signs and such. Once you clear your driving test, you will be handed your driving licence either on the spot, or you can receive it at your registered address.
